iPads for Learning

Theoretical models

To ensure the successful implementation of iPads into an educational setting it is important that your educators are confident and capable in using iPads to enhance their teaching practice.

"The key success factor for any iPad program is not necessarily the selection of the device but rather is the use of devices by engaged, supportive and prepared teachers within the context of a broader pedagogical change program. " (Keane, Lang and Pilgrim 2012)

Two models, SAMR and TPACK can be aligned to instructional models to assist with deeper conversations ensuring a considered approach to using technology for both surface learning and deeper learning across curriculum areas.

The SAMR Model

The Substitution Augmentation Modification Redefinition Model (SAMR), developed by Dr. Ruben R. Puentedura in 2006, offers a method of seeing how technology might impact teaching and learning. It also shows a progression that adopters of educational technology often follow as they progress through teaching and learning with technology.

Apps aligned to the SAMR Model

Many educators have aligned iPad apps to the different levels of the SAMR Model. While this can be useful, it is very important to be aware that the same app can be used at different levels of the SAMR Model depending on the pedagogy underlying the teaching.
