As part of the iPads for Learning trial, students had access to an iPad on a 1-to-1 basis, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for the duration of the trial.

1-to-1 programs maximise learning opportunities for students by providing access to information anywhere, anytime. A major benefit of 1-to-1 devices is that they can be networked for two way communication and collaboration between teachers and students and extend learning beyond the classroom.

To assist schools to smoothly implement their iPads, we have provided support materials. The In Their Hands: iPads for Learning Trial; 21 Steps to 1-to-1 Success outlines four phases for successful implementation of 1-to-1 devices:

  1. Planning
  2. Preparing
  3. Implementing
  4. Evaluating

These 21 steps provide guidelines for leadership teams to use when they implement a 1-to-1 learning program. For each step there is an overview, questions to consider, suggestions and links to relevant resources.

Here is an interactive version of the In Their Hands: iPads for Learning Trial; 21 Steps to 1-to-1 Success publication for you to use in your own school context.

Preps + iPads = Perfect!

"At our College we are toying with the idea of trialling a 1:1 iPad Trial with our Prep Cohort in 2011. During the week we conducted the 'Prep Experiment'. This involved our Year 5 students who are involved in the DEECD iPads for Learning Trial teaming up with one of our Prep Classes to do all things iPad!

The aim of the session was to determine just how the Prep children would respond to the iPads. We were interested to see if the younger kids would be able to navigate their way around the iPad device and how their fine motor skills would adapt to the touch controls, and, as we expected, they all passed with flying colours!"
